Thirteen-year-old allegedly tortured by teachers succumbs to injuries

MULTAN: An eighth-grade student of government elementary school scummed to injuries late Wednesday night in the District Head Quarter Hospital in Vehari, Punjab.

Ibrar Ahmad was allegedly beaten by two teachers, Muhammad Nabeel and Munazzah for incomplete homework. Speaking to The Express Tribune, Ibrar’s father, Muhammad Riaz said his son returned from school last week unable to speak, and also had a broken arm. Upon his parents’ inquiry, Ibrar revealed he was punched in the face and beaten with iron rods.

Riaz said the 13-year-old was taken to a nearby doctor but was later moved to the district head quarter hospital as his condition further deteriorated.

When contacted by The Express Tribune, both Nabeel and Munazzah denied the allegations. They claimed the teenager had gotten injured while bathing in a lake, adding that the boy was absent the day he said he was tortured. The teachers’ story was backed by Ibrar’s friends who also claimed he slipped while swimming at the lake, cracking his ribs and breaking his arm.

Taking notice of the matter, Deputy Commissioner Ali Akbar Bhatti suspended the two teachers until completion of the inquiry. He directed Chief Executive Officer Education to submit the report within a week.

Meanwhile, DPO Vehari Umar Saeed revealed that the body of the deceased had been shifted for post-mortem. He said in case the torture claim was vindicated by the autopsy, legal action would be taken against the accused.
